Residents Petition Against New Zoning Code in Las Cruces

In Las Cruces, a grassroots movement is underway, with residents canvassing to gather signatures in hopes of halting the implementation of a new zoning code named Realize Las Cruces, passed by the city council in February by a 6-1 vote. The new code aims to replace the binary zoning system with a more flexible, character-based development, but has faced opposition for encouraging high-density apartments and mixed-use developments in residential areas. Opponents, led by Sarah Smith from the Coalition of Conservatives in Action, need 3,240 signatures to potentially bring the decision to a November vote, arguing the new code could raise housing costs and change the community character. The city defends the reform as a four-year effort to encourage creative development and solve existing zoning limitations.

Explore Creative Passions at Artist's Workshop Week

The second annual Artist’s Workshop Week, organized by the Ten O’Clock Club in Las Cruces and conceived by local printmaker Gabriele Teich, offers a unique opportunity for both seasoned artists and novices to learn new crafts directly from experienced professionals. Scheduled from March 15 to March 23, the event features a series of hands-on seminars across various art forms including painting, sculpture, and more. With last year's event attracting 13 artists and over 50 participants, this year promises an expanded lineup of 33 artists ready to share their skills. Participants can book workshops through Teich's website, experiencing art without the long-term commitment or the need to purchase supplies. The initiative not only fosters creativity but also encourages community engagement and personal exploration in the arts.

Water Service Interruption Scheduled for East Madrid Avenue

On Wednesday, March 12, 2025, residents along East Madrid Avenue, from Mesquite Street to Solano Drive, will face a water outage from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. due to Renegade Construction connecting a new water line. Notices will be provided at least 48 hours in advance. Post-restoration, there may be discolored water, which is safe to drink but could affect laundry. The issue, linked to mineral deposits, should resolve within 24 hours; otherwise, residents are advised to flush their systems or contact the City of Las Cruces for help.

Thousands of New Mexicans start their day with Daily Las Cruces

“Reading the newsletter has become a really positive daily habit for me. I read it while drinking my coffee and planning the day. It saves me a ton of time, but it's really enjoyable too. It's great to have the news filtered down to just a handful of critical events everyday that actually matters to me. I also like reading the community profiles. They interview people locally like teachers, politicians, and small business owners. It's hard to find this anywhere else.”

“This newsletter is like a lifeline. I don't have the attention span these days to read the paper, and Facebook is a mess. This newsletter keeps me informed, without taking the whole day from me.”

“I like how this newsletter keeps me connected with our community. It's great to have a dedicated source that focuses on what's going on locally. So many news companies are focused on huge attention-grabbing national headlines. But, besides the entertainment value, it's not really relevant to my day-to-day. Also it's great the newsletter is free.”

“I'm a parent, and it's apparent how busy that makes me. I LOVE newspapers (especially the smell), but I never have time to read it anymore. So thank god this newsletter exists, and I can read it in a few minutes. If anything is really critical or catches my eye, I can always spend more time reading into each piece of news, but it isn't usually necessary.”
