Good morning, Las Cruces.
The city of Las Cruces will soon use new software starting May 25 to track if short-term rental owners have paid the 5% lodger’s tax passed in 2020.
The online system makes it easier for owners to register and pay by the 25th each month—those who do not pay will face a 10% late fee or $100 penalty.
Rep. Doreen Gallegos from Las Cruces sponsored House Bill 10 to protect public safety and business investments by establishing an enforcement bureau—this bill passed the House with a vote of 68 to 1 and the Senate with a vote of 25 to 1 and now awaits the governor’s signature.
The law empowers officials to conduct announced and unannounced inspections and seize illegal or altered cannabis products to keep consumers safe.
The New Mexico legislature ended its 60-day session on March 22, passing 194 of 1,182 bills—measures include criminal competency reform, an Extreme Risk Firearm Protection Order, expanded telehealth services, a Turquoise Alert system for missing Native Americans, and a Medical Psilocybin Act while several public safety proposals did not pass.
