Here's your local news at a glance for Tuesday, the 15th of April.
Good morning, Las Cruces.
Allen Theatres and the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission settled a $250,000 age bias claim on April 10th—Charles Green will get $25,000, Abby Parish $215,000, and 10 to 12 other workers will share part of $10,000.
The deal requires Allen Theatres to offer health insurance to workers over 65 and add new training on age bias—steps taken after claims of forced retirement and loss of health coverage.
300 Post, the post-production division of 828 Productions in Las Cruces, announced that Andy Chen—an experienced visual effects veteran with over two decades of expertise—is its new Head of Post-Production.
He will guide the team and work with local graduates as the studio grows in a global market.
The five-day Las Cruces International Film Festival ended with founder Ross Marks stating it is the largest student-run film fest and a classroom for film learning—guests like Michelle Hurd on April 12 and Helen Hunt on April 10 received awards for their work in drama and entertainment. This event brought film makers and fans together to share advice and celebrate creative achievements.
Student filmmakers from 83 schools in New Mexico showed 192 films at Film Prize Junior on April 6 at Kiva Auditorium in Albuquerque—29 films won prizes including over $12,000 in scholarships and grants.
Organ Mountain High, Deming High, Red Mountain Middle and Mescalero Apache High earned awards as the event also featured film panels and equipment demos from local professionals.
Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham vetoed HB 219 on April 11, which would have created Slot Canyon Riverlands State Park—a 783-acre park in Doña Ana County funded with around $9 million for the Energy, Minerals and Natural Resources Department.
State Sen. Jeff Steinborn of Las Cruces and state Reps. Nathan Small and Joanne Ferrary supported the bill, and the governor said adding another park would further stretch already understaffed facilities.
