- ➤ A busy arts week is set from April 25 to May 2 with events starting with a reading by poet Sylvia Chan at 7:30 p.m. on April 25 at Creative Media Theater and a classical concert at Plaza Theater in El Paso. Additional programs in the region include film screenings at Fountain Theatre in Mesilla, a local festival at Plaza de Las Cruces, an improv show at Black Box Theater, and a concert by Jon Pardi at the Pan American Center in Las Cruces—offering diverse cultural experiences. GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ The New Mexico Supreme Court on April 22 issued an order to resolve two disciplinary cases against former Doña Ana County Magistrate Court Judge Joel “Jose” Cano after he resigned on March 3 amid allegations that a Tren de Aragua gang member lived in a casita behind his home — the order permanently bars him from holding judicial office or officiating weddings. - ➤ On April 22, the New Mexico Supreme Court ruled that Judge Joel “Jose” Cano—who resigned effective March 21—cannot ever hold a judicial office or officiate weddings. The decision came after disciplinary cases were filed by the New Mexico Judicial Standards Commission following investigations linked to a federal arrest at his home. The Las Cruces Bulletin
- ➤ The New Mexico Supreme Court ruled unanimously on Monday, April 21 — protecting 911 dispatchers and governmental employees from lawsuits except for negligence — in a decision that ended a five-year legal battle brought by a Las Cruces family after the 2020 death of 16-year-old Isaac Brealey-Rood during a hike in the Organ Mountains.
