CULTURE NEWS

  • Las Cruces Public Libraries is hosting free paper sweet pea flower workshops on May 17, May 22, and May 23 at Thomas Branigan Memorial Library—held in Makerspace No. 2 on the second floor—and participants must register online, with the May 17 session starting at 2 p.m. and the May 22 and 23 sessions at 1:30 p.m.  The Las Cruces Bulletin
  • The New Mexico Farm & Ranch Heritage Museum will host its 25th annual Blessing of the Fields tomorrow from 10 to 11 a.m. at 4100 Dripping Springs Rd., where a procession and Prayer of the Four Directions will honor San Ysidro (the patron saint of farmers) while local artist Virginia Maria Romero displays a handcrafted bulto (a carving) and a plant sale marks the start of spring planting.  The Las Cruces Bulletin

  • The New Mexico State Bar Foundation’s Legal Resources for the Elderly Program (LREP) will host a free virtual legal webinar on May 20 at 11 a.m. for New Mexico residents, and it will cover financial powers of attorney and advance health care directives to help prepare for future needs (registration is available online or by calling 505-797-6005).  The Las Cruces Bulletin
  • The New Mexico Department of Agriculture invites chefs, sous chefs, and pastry chefs to apply for the NEW MEXICO—Taste the Tradition Chef Ambassador Program to promote local agriculture through food, media, and live events. Two ambassadors will serve a two-year term, and applications must be submitted by June 20 via email as detailed by the NMDA Marketing and Development Division.  The Las Cruces Bulletin
  • The Las Cruces City Council outlined a $610 million budget proposal during an April 28 work session for Fiscal Year 2026; the plan boosts the general fund by $5.7 million and provides a 5% wage increase for city employees while cutting overall spending from Fiscal Year 2025. Councilors will decide on the proposal on May 19 as they discuss funding for homeless outreach, new personnel, updated police and fire academies, and 17 new vehicles — including Ford interceptors and F-150 pickup trucks.  The Las Cruces Bulletin
  • Doña Ana County Commissioners terminated their joint agreement with Sunland Park to manage the Camino Real Regional Utility Authority during a May 13 meeting—launching a four-year process to divide assets and debt as water quality issues led to public complaints. Sunland Park’s mayor confirmed receipt of the notice and expressed the city’s interest in taking over operations within city limits if negotiations succeed.  Las Cruces Sun News
  • At the May 12 city council work session, Visit Las Cruces reported that travel has returned to pre-pandemic levels with lodger’s tax revenue of $2.8 million in FY 2024 and county visitor spending at $521.3 million—officials also shared a legislative update featuring 1,182 bills and over $13.8 million in funding for projects like public safety, housing, and transportation. This update highlights the city’s efforts to boost the local economy and reestablish the motorcoach market by 2028.  The Las Cruces Bulletin
  • Doña Ana County Fire Rescue named Cody Haver as the new deputy chief to lead the Fire Prevention Division and serve as the county fire marshal—he brings nearly 20 years of fire and emergency service experience from his work with LCFD since 2004 along with degrees in business and public administration from NMSU. His proven leadership is expected to benefit the department and community as he takes on these new roles.  The Las Cruces Bulletin
  • The county is accepting applications for a seven-member Airport Advisory Board for the International Jetport at Santa Teresa — applications are due by 5 p.m. on May 30 and selected members will serve a three-year term from July 1 through June 30.  The Las Cruces Bulletin
