- ➤ The Las Cruces Police Department and New Mexico Department of Game and Fish will host Fish with a Cop at Young Park pond, 1905 Nevada Ave on Saturday, June 7 from 8 a.m. to noon — kids and their families will receive free fishing gear, instructions, food, beverages, live music, and prizes while partnering with law enforcement or a professional angler. - ➤ Today, legendary country singer Dwight Yoakam begins his Cosmic Roundup and Rodeo Tour at the Pan American Center at 7:30 p.m. This week Las Cruces hosts a full slate of arts events — a medieval Renaissance Faire and a ukulele festival running from today through May 18, film screenings at the Fountain Theatre featuring 'No Other Land' running from May 16 through 29 and 'Hidden Flora' running from May 18 through 20, a butterfly celebration on May 17 from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. at the Chihuahuan Desert Nature Park, and an indie rock concert by The Lemon Twigs on May 21 at the Rio Grande Theatre. - ➤ Al Pacino stars in local filmmaker Ross Marks' upcoming horror film The Ritual, which opens June 6 at Allen Theatres Cineport 10 and features him as a priest exorcising a woman believed to be possessed. - ➤ In observance of Memorial Day, most City offices will be closed on Monday, May 26 while police + fire and select public services such as waste collection and pool operations will continue on their normal schedules. The Las Cruces Bulletin
- ➤ The City’s Traffic Management Section activated an AI-driven signal system along Lohman Avenue between Walnut Street and Nacho Drive to ease heavy afternoon traffic from 3 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. Early tests showed eastbound speeds increased by 53% and officials project $339,000 in fuel savings — the project was developed with Kimley-Horn and Econolite Systems to help lower emissions and improve commutes. - ➤ Construction at the new Columbia Elementary School on Elks Drive will close Zertuche Road from today to June 6, affecting residents along Zertuche and El Nido Roads (crews will cap a manhole and pave asphalt for underground utility work). HEALTH NEWS
- ➤ A New Mexico Department of Health report shows that from 2019 to 2023, hospital records revealed 30,882 visits by people experiencing homelessness and 488 hospital deaths from causes such as heart attacks and kidney failure. The study also found that the official count underestimates the true number of homeless individuals by two to four times + shows that these patients face greater health risks. Las Cruces Today
