  • An airman from Kirtland Air Force Base who went missing on May 24 was found dead at Elephant Butte Lake on May 26 — investigators from several agencies continue to probe the incident.  Las Cruces Sun News

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Students from all six Las Cruces public high schools celebrated graduation this week; Arrowhead Park Early College High School valedictorian Erika Cámuñez earned a 4.68 GPA and plans to study mechanical engineering and economics at New Mexico State University—three schools saw improved graduation rates with over 80% of LCPS students receiving diplomas.  The Las Cruces Bulletin
  • Alma d’Arte Charter High School was awarded the Outstanding Achievement in Innovation by the New Mexico Public Education Commission during the May 16 meeting. The award will be given at the June Charter School Conference in Albuquerque—school officials noted the school connects students with art and different cultures through programs like the Spanish market and mariachi conferences.  The Las Cruces Bulletin
  • Four mechanical and aerospace engineering students at New Mexico State University received the 2025-2026 Tim Thompson Graduate Scholarship at a senior banquet on April 30 at the Stan Fulton Center—each will get $10,000 divided between fall and spring.   • Doña Ana County officials announced plans to hire a Tucson-based engineering firm to inspect water infrastructure in Sunland Park and address the long-standing water crisis caused by high arsenic levels. They aim to complete the work in less than a year and said there will be no immediate rate hikes while boosting communication with residents and businesses — county leaders stressed this transition marks only the start of efforts to restore trust.  The Las Cruces Bulletin
