Las Cruces firefighters battled three fires Wednesday—one at Discount Tire at 7:30 a.m. with heavy smoke but no injuries, one at a shed on Lohman and Solano around 6 p.m. where a man was rescued and airlifted to a burn center in Lubbock, and one in a vacant home on East Court Ave around 8:20 p.m.—while investigators work to determine the causes.
Local organizations in Las Cruces are planning a series of Juneteenth events to honor the end of slavery, with celebrations starting June 13 & continuing through June 22.
Community events include a free jazz performance at Plaza de Las Cruces on June 15 & a community barbecue at NMSU on June 19 when government offices will be closed.
Doña Ana Community College and El Paso Electric Company mark 10 years of their electrical lineworker program partnership that offers students paid internships while they earn their certification.
The program has hired 50 graduates and provides scholarships and hands-on safety training—helping students aim for jobs with median pay above $92,000 a year.
Doña Ana Community College has open enrollment and is accepting applications from prospective and returning students for the upcoming semester — offering over 100 programs across six divisions — and it is known for small class sizes and low tuition.
Doña Ana County commissioners passed a resolution on June 10 to place up to $140 million in general obligation bonds on November’s ballot, with funds set aside for improving county fairgrounds, recreation facilities and buildings.
Commissioners said planned projects will align with the county’s strategic plan — community input is set to continue as final details are worked out.
The New Mexico Department of Health and its partners are offering free back-to-school vaccinations at Got Shots clinics that run from today to Aug 30—68 provider locations give children 0-18 the shots they need, and parents should call ahead and bring their child’s shot record.
