CRIME NEWS

  • Las Cruces police are searching for an African-American man about 5-foot-11 with short hair and a goatee who was last seen on June 14 in the 200 block of east Idaho Avenue wearing a black hoodie and dark pants and is accused of stabbing a 39-year-old man who escaped to a nearby Walgreens after the suspect demanded his car keys and spoke with a mid-west or east coast accent.  The Las Cruces Bulletin
  • Las Cruces police are investigating a stabbing on the 200 block of East Idaho Avenue early on June 14 when a 39-year-old man was attacked after refusing to give up his car keys—he escaped to a nearby Walgreens and was airlifted to an El Paso hospital while officers search for a tall suspect with short hair and a goatee.  Las Cruces Sun News

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Las Cruces residents have dealt with heavy smoke this week from the Trout Fire in the Gila National Forest; Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham declared a state of emergency on June 17 to allow state and federal aid for fire management and relief efforts in Grant County—where $750,000 has been allocated to support additional resources. The fire began on June 12, burned 18,278 acres by June 16, and wind-blown smoke has lowered air quality and prompted health advice for vulnerable residents.  The Las Cruces Bulletin

  • The New Mexico Banitas beat the Austin Outlaws 40-0 last week and now have a 3-3 record in Division 2 of the Women’s Football Alliance. Coach Jamar Cotton said the Las Cruces team is rebuilding—seeking nearly 20 new players and more funds to eventually turn pro.  The Las Cruces Bulletin
