- ➤ Las Cruces is gearing up for Fourth of July celebrations—on July 3, the city will host an Electric 5K and 1-Mile Fun Run along with an Electric Light Parade called 'Las Cruces Unidos!' that starts at Apodaca Park and ends at Maag Softball Complex, and on July 4 a concert with fireworks will be held at Pat and Lou Sisbarro Community Park on the NMSU campus. - ➤ Several arts events will take place soon as Ancient Skies, Modern Eyes will be held on July 10 at the NM Museum of Space History in Alamogordo (10 a.m. to 5 p.m.) featuring talks on ancient astronomy, while Fort Selden Historic Site tours are scheduled for Wednesday mornings in July, a Maya textile sale is set for July 19 at First Christian Church in Las Cruces, an Electric Light Parade with a 5K fun run will start at 7:30 p.m. and 9 p.m. respectively, and They Call Her Death will screen on July 6 at The Fountain Theatre in Mesilla with director Austin Snell in attendance. - ➤ Local recording artist and former KTAL-LP radio host Teresa Tudury will lead her band in an album release party and concert Saturday at Rio Grande Theatre. The band will perform 12 songs from her new album 'Perhaps You've Heard of Me,' recorded at Clarksdale Sound Stage with guest appearances by Ricki Lee Jones and Charlie Musslewhite—tickets are $25 with the album and $15 without, and proceeds will benefit Las Cruces Community Radio. - ➤ Kayla Blundell, a fine arts student at NMSU, worked with Dr. Juie Shetye’s research team to create Eclipse, a sculpture that uses refracted sunlight and multicolored vinyl pieces to show how a solar eclipse works—she designed the work to be easy for all ages to understand. - ➤ On June 23, Las Cruces City Council received an update on plans to spend $9.8 million from an opioid settlement with goals such as better naloxone access and universal screening for opioid use disorder while not focusing on schools. City staff will finalize details in July and the council will vote on the opioid plan in August and on a corridor revitalization on July 7 — steps aimed at community safety and development.
