Here's your local news at a glance for Saturday, the 27th of June.
Good morning, Las Cruces.
Local 14-year-old ninth grader Payton Gambordella started Payton’s Crafts to sell colorful crochet plushies and handmade accessories at the Farmer's Market through the Kids Can Jr. Vendors Program; she was inspired by online products and the market (each item is carefully crafted and sold for $5 to $40).
The Doña Ana Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution has organized a new exhibit at the New Mexico Farm & Ranch Heritage Museum that connects local history with America’s founding by showing how residents once supported the colonial cause.
It includes a marker at Klein Park that honors the historic role of El Camino Real.
Since 2019, New Mexico has invested over $250M in science-based literacy programs that raised reading proficiency by 10 points overall—with larger gains for underserved students—and this year Governor Lujan Grisham signed the High-Quality Literacy Instruction Act to boost teacher training, reading assessments, and individualized support.
City officials nominated five historic properties for the local cultural register and the city council will review the nominations later this summer, potentially launching a new inventory of community landmarks.
The move supports heritage tourism and preserves Las Cruces’ unique identity (a step forward in civic pride).
