CRIME NEWS

  • Las Cruces police charged Jeffrey L. Cruickshank, 40, with several felonies including two counts of attempted murder—he also faces charges for aggravated burglary, armed robbery, and aggravated battery with a deadly weapon—after a June 14 stabbing on Idaho Avenue left a 39-year-old man injured; the suspect is held without bond at the Dona Ana County Detention Center.  Las Cruces Today

CULTURE NEWS

  • Two NMSU journalism professors published a book that restores Alfred T. Palmer’s World War II photos, showing American women working in defense plants and other war efforts. The book features 110 images mostly in color and was released this year during the war's 80th anniversary.  The Las Cruces Bulletin

  • Josh Salmon was named Director of the PGA Golf Management program at NMSU on May 1, replacing Pat Gavin after 32 years of service + Salmon acted as assistant director for 15 years and is President of the PGA Sun Country Section.  The Las Cruces Bulletin

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Two county officials say the state owes millions for jail costs after counties spent $383 million from June 2023 to July 2024 but received only $4.6 million—roughly 1.2% of expenses. They said lawmakers must change the reimbursement law or counties may sue to recoup the shortfall.  The Las Cruces Bulletin
  • New Mexicans in the Tularosa Basin who were exposed to fallout from the Trinity atomic bomb test are now eligible for RECA compensation after a decades-long fight by the Downwinders Consortium—this law offers aid for 19 cancers with awards capped at $100,000 over two years and was added to a bill that reduces food aid and medical services to fund tax cuts. HEALTH NEWS

  • The New Mexico Department of Health's Las Cruces Public Health Office — located at 1170 N. Solano Ave. — is offering free back-to-school vaccinations for children through the 'Got Shots' campaign. Parents must bring a shot record and Medicaid or insurance card, with appointments available today through July 22 and walk-in sessions scheduled for July 23-25 and 28-29.  Las Cruces Sun News

  • The NM/TX Majors—a youth baseball team with players from Las Cruces, El Paso, and Houston—will travel to Cooperstown from July 24 to July 30 to play in a tournament with over 80 teams.
