Here's your local news at a glance for Saturday, the 26th of July.
Good morning, Las Cruces.
Since early July, thunderstorms caused flooding that damaged Mescalero and nearby areas, and over 90 airmen from Holloman and 7th ASOS worked with local volunteers to clear debris, sort donations, and fill sandbags to protect key sites—such as a fish hatchery that lost most of its fish. Air Force leaders said the strong partnership with the Mescalero Apache Tribe boosted the recovery effort and helped the community begin repairs.
Alan Duane Dodson was convicted on July 23 on five counts of first-degree criminal sexual penetration and one count of second-degree criminal sexual contact against a 10-year-old relative—he now faces over 100 years in jail and will remain in custody until his sentencing on September 5—Doña Ana County authorities confirmed.
The Town of Mesilla is considering moving some court cases to the county to save at least $87,000, and the mayor postponed a resolution last week that would have accepted subcommittee recommendations—local code cases would still be heard in town.
If approved at the next meeting, the plan will go to the New Mexico Supreme Court and the Doña Ana Magistrate Court for review.
