Good morning, Las Cruces. Here's your local news at a glance for Friday, the 1st of August.

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Local social media influencer Leo Sanchez, known as thepovfoodie, has boosted local restaurant traffic by filming immersive reviews that brought a rush of customers to places like the snow shaved ice shop near downtown; his videos have doubled business for some spots. He plans to launch a merchandise line and donate half the proceeds to the community—further highlighting his support for hidden local gems.  The Las Cruces Bulletin

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Alden Sinlott, 12, of Las Cruces Academy collected flight data from his model rocket using an Arduino and a 3-axis accelerometer—he recorded 2,500 measurements, reached 102 feet, and fixed early setbacks to complete his experiment.  The Las Cruces Bulletin
  • Local 10X Youth Shooting Club earned national awards after a competition in Bentonville, Arkansas where 16-year-old Weston Marr placed first in safety trail discipline and second in the shotgun event. The club requires members aged from eight to eighteen to complete a state approved hunter education course and its junior team won awards in multiple events—underscoring its commitment to safe firearm use—and will hold more training sessions in the coming months.  The Las Cruces Bulletin

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The League of Women Voters urges residents to talk with lawmakers and vote against the SAVE Act—this bill would require extra documents to register and could hinder many from voting. The group says acting now is key to protecting fair voting rights amid concerns over federal power imbalance.  The Las Cruces Bulletin

HEALTH NEWS

  • Animal Companions of Las Cruces, a grassroots group aiming to ease the workload of local veterinary clinics, used community donations last summer to bring externs from Washington State University and successfully recruited five newly graduated veterinarians relocating to town this summer (a sixth is expected). This effort helps address the lack of 24-7 emergency care for local pets.  The Las Cruces Bulletin

LIFESTYLE NEWS

  • Local golfers are advised to check weather alerts and seek shelter when lightning is near, as heavy rain and dangerous storms can disrupt play and cause hazards. Golf courses use lightning detectors (which sound loud warnings) and experts recommend carrying waterproof gear, extra gloves and a rainsuit to stay safe and dry during the rainy season.  The Las Cruces Bulletin
