New Mexico State University launches a systemwide mentorship program this fall to help undergraduates connect with faculty, staff and administrators for academic, personal and career guidance.

Mentors will meet with up to five students monthly — with a kickoff event on Friday, Aug. 21.

Las Cruces offers a grant program to reimburse small businesses up to $5,000 for repairs and security upgrades after vandalism or theft.

Eligible businesses on South Solano, El Paseo, west Picacho, and Motel Blvd can apply — they will receive on-site safety assessments in partnership with the police department.

New Mexico health officials warn that roughly 770 heat-related emergency room visits recorded since April 1 have surpassed last summer's total of 761, and they advise residents to stay indoors, drink water, and avoid outdoor activities as temperatures are expected to exceed 100 degrees in parts of the state.
