- ➤ Las Cruces firefighters responded just before 1 a.m. Monday to a structure fire on the 3800 block of Silverado Loop and quickly knocked down the flames in the attic despite low water pressure — they helped a homeowner exit safely with no injuries as the cause is still under investigation. ECONOMY NEWS
- ➤ A new five-year study shows that Spaceport America's economic output reached $239.8 million in 2024 from $72.3 million in 2019 with direct jobs increasing from 242 to 313 and ripple effect jobs growing from 396 to 790. The report noted that Doña Ana County benefited most as many employees live in Las Cruces—tax revenue also increased from $7.3 million to $24.4 million and future space technology may allow orbital launches in 5 to 10 years. - ➤ New Mexico State University president Valerio Ferme clarified a June memo in an August letter that announced a 1% one-time reduction across all departments due to a $2.5 million structural budget deficit—ensuring that the overall budget remains unchanged as funds are reallocated to manage federal research cuts. - ➤ On Aug. 26, 2025, 61 candidates filed to run in local races in Doña Ana County – contests include three Las Cruces City Council races, the mayor of Anthony, and three school board positions.
