Good morning, Las Cruces. Here's your local news at a glance for Monday, the 8th of September.

CRIME NEWS

  • Las Cruces police asked lawmakers today to toughen juvenile crime laws after a mass shooting on March 21 that injured 15 and killed 3 by recommending that judges not dismiss cases solely for a child’s incompetency to stand trial but first require mental health treatment—steps intended to improve accountability for minors.  The Las Cruces Bulletin

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Settlement documents were filed Friday to end a 12-year lawsuit over Rio Grande water that pitted Texas, New Mexico, Colorado and the federal government against each other, and the agreement could give local water users more stability. The proposal sets a new water accounting framework—benefiting cities, irrigation districts and farmers—with a hearing scheduled for Sept. 29 in Philadelphia.  The Las Cruces Bulletin
  • New Mexico has extended a temporary emergency food program that allows residents in Doña Ana and nine other counties to use their EBT cards for hot ready-to-eat foods from deli departments until September 30—this measure helps families affected by flooding in Lincoln County.  The Las Cruces Bulletin

HEALTH NEWS

  • Memorial Medical Center is launching a new Mom’s Health Matters Program today to help new moms by providing a teal wristband — a tool to remind families and healthcare providers to watch for complications during the critical six weeks after delivery. Local health partners will use the program to speed up care and work to reduce maternal deaths.  The Las Cruces Bulletin
