COMMUNITY NEWS

  • On September 9, the Boys & Girls Club of Las Cruces received a historic $1.5 million donation from Nusenda Credit Union to build a new gym and launch a financial literacy program. The donation will be distributed over five years and gives Nusenda naming rights on the gym, marking the largest gift in the club’s history.  The Las Cruces Bulletin

CULTURE NEWS

  • Local writer Philip Connors published a new hybrid book called 'The Mountain Knows the Mountain—A Fire Watch Diary' that mixes diary notes from his time as a fire watcher in the Gila National Forest with haiku poetry inspired by his health challenges. He held his book launch on September 16 and will give a reading in Hillsboro on September 22.  The Las Cruces Bulletin
  • Organizer Mario Sauceda said the Las Cruces Game Convention will return in March 2026 on March 28 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. at Dona Ana Community College for video game contests, comic books, and costume play — free tickets will be offered to local groups to encourage family participation.  The Las Cruces Bulletin

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The City of Las Cruces is hosting a series of public meetings later this month and early next month to decide how to spend funds from a 0.325% gross receipts tax increase approved in November 2024. The sessions will take place at Branigan Library on September 30 + at other sites on October 1, 2, 7, 8, and 9 with a final City Council work session on October 27.  The Las Cruces Bulletin
  • Local elections impact daily life in Las Cruces—from school funding to water rights—and low voter turnout leaves many without a voice; local leaders urge residents to get informed. Businesses for a Safer Las Cruces will host a candidate forum on September 22 at 6 p.m. at the Farm and Ranch Museum—offering voters a chance to learn about candidates’ plans.  The Las Cruces Bulletin
  • OIR Group presented its audit report to the city council showing that LCPD investigated 10 cases, found 32 sustained allegations out of 40, and took actions from reprimands to terminations. The report praised LCPD for quickly adopting recommendations—such as shortening investigative timelines and working with legal advisors—for its proactive oversight.  The Las Cruces Bulletin
  • Concerned citizens in Doña Ana County held a press conference on September 17 to ask for a delay in the county vote on Project Jupiter, a $165 billion data center planned for Santa Teresa, while Sunland Park formally requested a postponement on September 16 due to worries over water use and local infrastructure.   • The low‐cost dental clinic at Dona Ana Community College will soon accept Medicaid while continuing to offer a full range of services—like cleanings, oral cancer screenings, and full‐mouth x‐rays—and it now has Dr. Bianca Ramirez on staff as part of its teaching program. LIFESTYLE NEWS

  • Work continues at the new Elite Family Entertainment Center in Las Cruces where a 92,000-square-foot former Kmart is being renovated—its indoor pickleball courts could be ready in as little as 90 days if the roof finishes soon. Developers said the full facility, which will also include bowling, laser tag and a Burger Time restaurant, will complete by March or April and local officials support the new family center.  The Las Cruces Bulletin

SPORTS NEWS

  • Lupe Lozoya, 67, a former boxing champion and current coach at Cross Town Boxing Gym, will be inducted into the New Mexico Boxing Hall of Fame on September 27 in Roswell—he earned four consecutive titles from 1978-1981 and now mentors young boxers.  The Las Cruces Bulletin
