ECONOMY NEWS

  • The Santa Teresa campus in Dona Ana County became one of five sites chosen for data centers under the $500B Stargate project as a consortium of OpenAI—Oracle—and Softbank works to expand AI computer capacity. County officials approved $165B in bonds after public debate, and the project is set to create 750 permanent jobs, 50 part-time jobs, and 2,500 construction jobs while promising $360 million in tax payments.  Las Cruces Sun News
  • Project Jupiter, a new artificial intelligence data center set to create 2,500 construction jobs and 750 full-time positions paying $75,000 to $100,000 a year, is moving forward in Las Cruces after Doña Ana County approved an industrial revenue bond on Sept.19—though a rushed town hall on Sept.10 sparked distrust among residents.  The Las Cruces Bulletin

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Doña Ana Community College will hold its 23rd golf tournament on October 10 to raise money for scholarships and help the campus food bank, and the school needs more golfers to join before the October 3 registration deadline. The four-man scramble event costs $500 per team or $125 per player—lunch, an awards ceremony and a raffle will follow.  The Las Cruces Bulletin
  • Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham announced last week that free childcare is now available to all state residents to boost early education—removing income restrictions through the Early Childhood Education and Care Department. The state also set up a $12.7 million fund for childcare center improvements and requested an extra $20 million for the next fiscal year to help grow provider numbers.  The Las Cruces Bulletin

  • National Conservation Lands celebrates its 25th anniversary today as a system of nearly 40 million acres managed by BLM that began with the Grand Staircase—Escalante National Monument in 1996; local tourism at Organ Mountains—Desert Peaks has grown and boosted our community’s economy.  The Las Cruces Bulletin

HEALTH NEWS

  • Memorial Medical Center has made naloxone free via a vending machine in its emergency room lobby to help combat opioid overdoses — the spray works for 30 to 90 minutes to give extra time for emergency intervention. The program is offered in partnership with the New Mexico Health Care Authority to reduce barriers to life-saving treatment.  The Las Cruces Bulletin

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • In August, Dona Ana County homes listed for sale had a median price of $369,000—down slightly from last month and 1.5% below August 2024's $374,500. The homes averaged 2,068 square feet at $187 per square foot, and 212 new listings appeared while properties stayed on the market for a median 64 days.  Las Cruces Sun News

  • The Warrior League gives 80 children a chance to play tee-ball at Presley Askew Field with support from local sponsors including NMSU, Allen Theatres, Kimberly Skaggs & The Game I & II Sports Bars. Fans can join Draft Day on Sunday, Sept. 28 at 1 p.m. and watch games on Oct. 12, Oct. 19, and Nov. 2 as a New Mexico State University player offers encouragement during play.  The Las Cruces Bulletin
  • Las Cruces High's Raylene Carillo scored 19 goals to lead her team in Class 5A District 3 girls soccer, while Organ Mountain upset state-ranked Gadsden 5-2 on Sept 23 — a result that shifted midseason expectations for the district's four top teams.  The Las Cruces Bulletin
  • At the Band of America New Mexico Regional marching competition held Saturday at New Mexico State University, Organ Mountain High School in Las Cruces finished fifth with a score of 71.95 on its 'Good Night Moon' show that captured the glow of the local night sky. Director Shawn Silva said the students learned leadership and teamwork skills that will help them in future contests+ parent volunteers also played a key role in supporting the team.  The Las Cruces Bulletin
  • On Sept. 23, the Organ Mountain Knights upset Gadsden 3-1 in district play, showing that District 3 boys soccer is fiercely competitive—local teams like Mayfield and Centennial, led by key players, will battle for a state championship repeat as the season continues.
