The $15 million Arrowhead Studios project broke ground on Sept.
30 in Las Cruces, providing film and television production opportunities and hands-on training for NMSU and Doña Ana Community College students. The project, funded by NMEDD as part of the Media Arts Collective Initiative, will be completed in December 2026 — a move expected to boost the local economy.
Nancy Orta, a first-grade teacher at East Picacho Elementary, was named New Mexico Teacher of the Year on Sept.
29 — an honor given for her decades of work in early learning and literacy. She will represent New Mexico in the National Teacher of the Year competition and serve as a spokesperson for education.
MountainView Regional Medical Center has opened a new urgent care center on Lohman Ave. to replace its closed Walton Ave. site—this center, located at 4351 E.
Lohman Ave., Suite 100, treats non-life-threatening illnesses and injuries with services like X-rays and lab work. It is open seven days a week from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. to offer a faster alternative to the emergency room.
Cancer Warriors Week—organized by founder Marci Dickerson and her team—begins on Oct 2 with a Pink NMSU football game and tailgate at Aggie Memorial Stadium and continues with events including a public school football game on Oct 3, a Zumba session on Oct 4, Bingo for Boobs on Oct 7, Candles for Hope on Oct 8, Bras for a Cause on Oct 9, and a 5K run on Oct 11. All funds raised will stay in Doña Ana County to help fight breast and other women’s cancers.
New Mexico State University named Joe Fields, deputy athletic director at Tulsa, as its new athletic director and he will start on October 8.
NMSU announced his selection on Sept. 29—this follows nearly 10 months after firing the previous director—and expects him to lead Aggie athletics to a bright future.
