COMMUNITY NEWS

  • El Caldito’s 33rd annual Empty Bowls fundraiser is scheduled for Friday, October 17 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at St. Paul’s United Methodist Church—organizers aim to raise $45,000 for the soup kitchen that now serves 400 to 600 people daily while local restaurants, students and volunteers support silent and online auctions.  The Las Cruces Bulletin
  • Main Street Las Cruces received a $10,000 grant from the New Mexico Tourism Department on October 3 to boost the upcoming Chile Drop—an annual New Year's Eve celebration that draws over 9,000 visitors and national media attention. The funding will expand programming and promotion as the city prepares to showcase its cultural pride as the Chile Capital of the World.  Las Cruces Today

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Museum of Art opened the exhibit Into the Hourglass: Paño Arte from the Rudy Padilla Collection on Oct. 3 — one of only two venues for the traveling show — and it will run until Jan. 3, showing paño art and recycled sculptures from the National Hispanic Cultural Center. Upcoming events include a documentary screening on Oct. 25 at 2 p.m. and another on Dec. 5 at 5:30 p.m. — a Zoom presentation is set for Dec. 5 at 1 p.m. — to help viewers learn about this unique art form.  The Las Cruces Bulletin
  • A busy week of local events fills Las Cruces from today through October 16—starting with the Pickle Jam Concert at Blue Moon Bar & Grill and family-friendly art shows, while later days feature theatre performances, hikes, film festivals and community markets across town. ECONOMY NEWS

  • Franklin Mountain Packaging in Santa Teresa and two other local companies will receive over $800K through the state’s Job Training Incentive Program to train workers in manufacturing and logistics—announced in September, the funds cover at least half of trainee wages and give higher reimbursements for rural areas and companies hiring recent graduates.  The Las Cruces Bulletin

EDUCATION NEWS

  • New Mexico State University Global Campus partnered with El Paso Electric to boost the regional workforce by giving its employees preferred tuition rates for online programs in fields like engineering, business and IT—this collaboration also offers energy-focused microcredential courses and co-hosted information sessions to advance career skills in the evolving energy industry.  The Las Cruces Bulletin
  • Fifty New Mexico State University researchers have been named among the top two percent of scientists worldwide by a list compiled by Stanford and Elsevier, an increase from 41 last year. Interim research head Patricia Sullivan said the milestone shows the university’s growing research strength—recognizing work in many fields.  The Las Cruces Bulletin

HEALTH NEWS

  • Researchers from NMSU found that older Americans with chronic illnesses and low cognitive function face a higher risk of early death—studies show that combining conditions such as COPD and diabetes with low cognitive abilities significantly increases that risk.  The Las Cruces Bulletin
